Seminars, journal clubs and longer stays
Want to visit?
I organise two seminar series in Toronto and can usually help make room in a couple of others. If you would like to give a talk, or to come visit the University of Toronto as a long-term visitors, here is how I can help facilitate that.
Give a talk
I organise two seminar series, and we are always looking for speakers:
- The Brown Bag Seminar at the Department of Statistical Sciences. In person only — this one cannot take a remote speaker.
- SMILE — astroStatistics and MachIne LEarning — in astronomy: biweekly, alternating with the ART group meeting, where we also welcome visitors who want to give a talk. Remote speakers are welcome.
I am also happy to help set something up at two venues I do not run myself but am part of:
- The joint York + U of T Galaxy Journal Club
- The Extragalactic Theory Meeting
Both of those can take a remote speaker too. In person is of course preferred — the conversations afterwards are most of the point — but if you are on the other side of an ocean, remote is better than nothing. We can also nominate speakers for the department-wide TASTY talks, but this has to be done further in advance (ideally before the beginning of the semester).

Come for longer
If you want to do a visit of more than a week (e.g., if you wish to work on some project idea with us), we can potentially provide some funds. Toronto is a good place for these visits: CITA, Statistical Sciences and the Astro Department are all within a few minutes of each other, so a single visit can reach three rather different research communities.
CITA. CITA’s visitor pages cover their visitor’s program, but also some practical questions on getting here, accommodation and the visitor reimbursement process.
Dunlap. The Dunlap Institute also runs a visitor programme. The thing to know is that it works by nomination, not application so someone here has to nominate you, and I am happy to try to do so. Nominations are accepted twice a year, with deadlines on 1 April and 1 October.
In general support through CITA or the departments tends to be discretionary and arranged case by case, depending on what you want to do and when.
